On August 25, 1988, a 550 gallon waste oil tank was removed for one excavation
and two 1,000 gallon fuel tanks (regular and unleaded gasoline) were excavated from an
adjacent excavation. The tank reported to store unleaded gasoline may have held
kerosene. Analytical results of soil samples collected beneath the tanks indicated that
petroleum hydrocarbons and gasoline related constituents were present in the soil beneath
the two 1,000 gallon tanks. Constituents were detected below levels of concern in the
sample collected bene-7th the waste oil tank. Results of this investigation were presented in
a Kleinfelder report dated September 22, 1988.
On November 9, 1958 additional soil was removed from the fuel tank excavation to further
assess the extent of petroleum contamination. One section of the excavation bottom was
advanced from a depth of 11 feet to 19 feet. Soil samples were qualitatively screened in the
field with an organic vapor detector. Organic vapor readings were detected at 408 parts
per million by volume (ppmv) from a sample collected at a depth of 19 feet within the
excavation and 740 ppmv from a sample collected at a depth of 16 feet, 10 feet away from
the excavation.
Based on the organic vapor screening results, Nomellini Construction decided to further
assess the lateral and vertical extent of contamination with a soil boring program. In May
1989 soil samples were collected for laboratory analysis from nine borings drilled in the
vicinity of the former tank excavation. High concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons
were detected in the shallow soil near the former tanks and near the ground water surface
in several of the borings. Findings of the soil boring assessment are presented in
Kleinfelder's report "Nomellini Construction, Preliminary Soil Assessment Report,
Stockton,California"Oated June 14, 1990.
F13-90-66 2
