I
4
Protect No 014-95262
16'
Page No 7
7.1.3 Brine Tank Vjcini#y
One sample (KHA-6) was collected from a small (3x3 feet x 3 5 feet deep) concrete-walled vault
with an earthen floor located between the brine tank and the main building wall The vault contains an
approximate 4 inch diameter dram line with flapper-style check valve The line is oriented east-west and
protects beneath the building An interview with a Safeway employee suggested this waste line connected
to the other wastewater lines which eventually terminate at the on-site wastewater treatment plant
One sample was collected at a depth of 6 to 12 inches below the bottom of the vault(4 5 feet below
surrounding grade) No analysis for TPH-D, TPH-G or BTEX was conducted Instead, the sample was
analyzed for electrical conductivity, nitrate, and chloride Analytical results were 150 µmhos/cm EC and
12,000 mg/kg chloride Nitrate was not detected
7.2 Exploratory
Six exploratory soil borings were advanced at particular areas of the site The soil boring
designation and related areas of investigation are listed below
KB-1 Brine spill area
KB-2 Background
KB-3,4 Potential leakage from wastewater treatment pond
KB-5 Potential leakage from clarifier
KB-6 Potential Ieakage from sump
The chemical data from samples collected from the borings (Table 2) was used to determine if site
activities had affected soil quality or potentially affected groundwater quality Also, data from boring logs
was used to interpret site geology, including its variation throughout the project site
7.2.1 Soil Profile
The basin deposits that comprise the subsurface profile at the project site consist predominantly of
clays, with lesser silt and very minor sands (see Appendix A for copies of the boring logs) In general,
review of the logs shows a silty clay to predominate from surface to 10 to 12 feet bgs A silty unit was
often present from this depth to 15 to 20 feet bgs Below this depth, silty clays or clayey silts and
occasionally a sandy unit were present to the limit of the borings at 25 feet bgs
The subsurface material was generally noted as being damp from surface to the 20 to 25 feet depth
interval -- samples below that were logged as moist The water table was approximately 25 feet bgs at the
KRAZAN& ASSOCIATES, INC
Offices Serving the Western Unied States
95262 P52
