 FOXEWIRONMENTAL ERVICE5, INC.
8015 West Cliff Drive * Knoxville, TN 3 919 * (615) 690-1996
HYDROCARBON RECOVERY SYSTEM
PRINCIPAL OF OPERATION
Description:
The hydrocarbon recovery system consists of product recovery pump, a
groundwater depression pump, (if required) , two above ground 550 gallon
skid tanks, one 1000 gallon underground tank a reservoir, an air stripping
tower and' an optional volitization bed.
Operation:
This system can be used with either a single recovery pump or a recovery
pump and a depression pump- combination, depending on site specific conditions.
Upon start up, the two above ground tanks are charged with clean water to
create the product/water separation system, and thereafter, the fluid level
is maintained automatically by means of a ,st nd pipe located on the water tank.
Recovered product is pumped to the separatior tank, which -is equipped with a
product/water discriminator. When a product thickness of 1/2 inch accumulates
on the water surface of the separator tank, the product/water discriminator
activates a solenoid valve, allowing the recovered product to gravity flow into
the underground storage tank.
When a mixture of product and water are pumped into the separator tank, and
separation takes place, 'the water then flows from the bottom of the separator
tank to the top of the water tank. Water from the bottom of the water tank
flows through a stand pipe into the water fed tank, which supplies the water
pump. The water pump is attached, by means f piping, to the 'spray ring within
the air stripping tower, and a flow meter/totalizer is located between the pump
and -the spray ring.
The spray ring is equipped with spray nozzlef that are aimed vertically. The
number of nozzles may vary depending on the pumping rate, and the Dumping rate
can be varied from two gallons per minute to 15 gallons per minute.
Water sprayed from the nozzles pass through two atomization screens to further
break up „the droplets, which are subjected to a constant updraft of air that
is created by a low pressure high velocity b ower. An :absorber pack is placed
near the top of the tower to reduce misting rom the top of the tower and pro-
duce a more constant pressure on the atomiza ion screens.
The purpose of the air stripping tower is to change the water from the separator
system into a fine mist, exposing the mist to a constant air flow, allowing any
soluable hydrocarbons to volatize off and render the effluent from the air
stripping tower suitable for approved discharge. Depending .on location, the
clean discharge water from the recovery system can be either fed into a sanitary
sewer, storm sewer, or drainage ditch, provided that the necessary permits. or
authorization is obtained prior to such discliarge.
