DU PONT DE NEMOURS & COMPANY l C(
INCORPORATED
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE 19898
CHEMICALS AND PIGMENTS DEPARTMENT
October 8, 1987
Mr. Michael Hansen
Kayo Oil Company
P.O. Box 190
Lodi , CA 95421
RE: CVRWQCB Comments on the Groundwater Contamination Assessment Report
and the Remediation Plan Report prepared b Du Pont for 800 E. Highway 12,
Lodi .
Dear Mr. Hansen:
We have carefully considered the questions and comments transmitted by Mr.
Gary Johnson of the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board in
his letter of September 18, 1987. The answers to many of these questions
have been incorporated into the final versions of our two reports, which
you should receive shortly. However, this letter addresses each of his
questions or comments specifically item by item.
REPLIES TO "COMMENTS ON THE TWO VOLUMES SUBMITTED" :
1 - In response to the need for wast discharge requirements,
several points need, to be made.
A. Nitrates will not be used in bioremediation and will not be
introduced into- the groundwater by Du Pont.
B. Hydrogen peroxide spontaneously decomposes to form water and
oxygen. This will be especially rapid in the air stripper.
C. Residual phosphate after passage through the air stripper
will be consumed by microorganisms in the pond or be
recycled back into the groundwater, thus eliminating any .
accumulation of phosphate. Once phosphate addition has
ceased after bioremediation, the phosphate levels will
quickly return to baseline, usually within 2-4 weeks.
2 - Copies of the original reports from Canonie Environmental have
been been added to Table 3. Canonie is a California approved
` laboratory and as such their QA/QC procedures are on file.
E
f
3 - All new well installations (including redrills) will be
€ supervised by a California Registered Geologist or Certified
€ Engineering Geologist. This supervision will be furnished by
our local subcontractors.
