Nutrient optimization atudiere employed radiolebeled <br /> Xylene to determine the fate of this relatively recalcitrant chemical in tha <br /> t prasence of 18 different combinations and concentrations of nutrients. <br /> ` (phosphorus source, nitrogen source, and trace acetals). The nutrient <br /> } treatment which provided the highest level of mineralized xylene (expressed <br /> s' vas evolved radiolabeled CO.,) was different for the two moil samplos. The <br /> nutrient treatment containing 40 ppm phosphate (P) and 100.ppm ammonium <br /> chloride (N) ranked high (greatest mingrslization) for both nail slurries, <br /> followed by: 40 ppm P and 50 ppm N (low nutrient treatment); and, 80 ppm P <br /> and 100 ppm N (medium nutrient treatment). <br /> The low and medium nutrient combinations 'in the absence of trace metals <br /> x were chosen for ® 900-fold scale-up teat. Microbial activity was enhanced <br /> (as determined by adenosine triphosphate analysis) for both of these <br /> treatments after two weeks of incubation; and the medium nutrient treatment <br /> Increased the microbial activity with a concomitant lose of ben:xena, toluenep <br /> and xylene.
