(Delta), was authorized by Ultramar Inc. (Ultramar), to
conduct soil sampling during renovation at Ultramar Station No. 696, located at 2448 West Kettleman
• Lane, Lodi, San Joaquin County, California. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the
possible presence of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil beneath the former product distribution lines and
dispensers. This letter report presents the results of our investigation. The location of the site is
shown in Figure 1 and site features are shown in Figure 2.
Background
Prior to acquisition of the site by Ultramar in July 1990, the site was owned and operated by Conoco,
Inc. The presence of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and ground water beneath the site was detected
prior to 1985. Since that time, numerous investigations have been conducted at the site. There have
been 36 ground water monitoring or soil vapor extraction wells installed at the site and on adjacent
properties. A total of 20 of these wells, and a domestic water supply well, have been previously
destroyed. Three single-walled underground fuel storage tanks were removed from the site in
March 1989, and were replaced by three double-walled tanks. Remedial activities have included the
installation of a soil vapor extraction system, which began operation in December 1989 and was
turned off in April 1994. The station was closed in October 1994 for remodeling, including
relocation and replacement of double-walled product distribution lines and dispensers.
Scope of Work
On November 1, 1994, the double-walled product lines were removed from the site. A Delta
representative collected seven soil samples (PL-1 through PL-7) from the product line trenches at
depths of 4.5 to 6 feet below grade. The sampling locations are shown in Figure 3. The work was
observed by Mr. Harlin Knoll of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division and
Mr. Jake Stryd of Ultramar.
On November 2, 1994, the trenches were further excavated at sample locations PL-2 and PL-5. Soil
samples PL-2A and PL-5A were collected at depths of 10 feet and 8 feet below grade, respectively.
Froviding a Competitive Fuge
