The PIER presents the results of
soil and groundwater sampling at two on-site soil borings completed on 12 November 2001 following the
excavation of approximately 4,000 cubic yards of impacted soils in November 1995.
Analytical results from the eight soil samples and the two water samples collected and analyzed show soil
contamination at one boring from 10 to 25 feet, and groundwater contamination at both borings. The depth to
first water was encountered at 30 to 35 feet below ground surface. Maximum groundwater contamination
identified from the two groundwater grab samples show 2,300 micrograms per liter(µg/l)total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg),21 µg/1 benzene, 120 µg/1 MtBE, and 25 µg/1 1,2-dichloroethane. Based on
these concentrations, a groundwater investigation is required.
The PIER did not include recommendations to identify the nature and extent of contamination found, nor did it
include well construction details for the on-site domestic well. Therefore,by 25 February 2002, submit a plan
of work to define the lateral and vertical extent of soil and groundwater contamination. The plan of work must
address the following items:
• Install a minimum of three shallow monitoring wells to determine the groundwater flow direction and
gradient. The monitoring well screen interval should not exceed 20 feet in length for water table
monitoring wells(15 feet below first water, and five feet above). Additional monitoring wells are likely
to be required after the groundwater flow direction is determined.
• Define the vertical extent of groundwater contamination by completing soil borings or cone penetrometer
testing(CPT)borings, and sampling groundwater in preferential pathways.
• Complete a well receptor survey within 2,000 feet of the site. Provide a map of identified receptors
(including the inoperative on-site domestic well),and provide well details and distances from the subject
site in a table. Propose to sample threatened wells.
California Environmental Protection Agency
0 Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing Califomia is real.
