Caltrans Farmington Rd OC-Replace
OGD-N
Drilling Plan
Drilling Operation/Location
Caltrans Drilling Services and drill crews will perform the drilling operation. This drilling plan
includes a total of two (2) borings needed to characterize the site and to provide the subsurface
information needed for foundation design. One (1)boring will be located on the east side shoulder
of the northbound lanes of SR-99. One (1) boring will be located on the west side shoulder of the
southbound lanes of SR-99. The proposed borings will be on the shoulder may not require lane
closure. All proposed boring locations are shown by the red circles on the location map. It is
anticipated that the boring will take approximately up to one working week to complete. The
maximum depth of the borings from the ground surface will not exceed 100 feet (this will depend
on pile size, design loads and strength of the subsurface materials).
Drilling Equipment
Typical drilling equipment consist of truck-mounted or trailer-mounted drill rig, water tender(water
truck),and a crew cab with trailer. Also, one or two Engineering Geologist/Engineer's vehicles are
required to support the drilling operation (shown below).
Drilling Procedures
Drilling will be made utilizing Hollow Stem Auger Boring (eight inch diameter). But, if the
groundwater is encountered, advancement of the test borings might require the use of Mud Rotary
self-casing drilling system (four inch diameter). This drilling system requires the use of drilling
fluid to maintain hole stability, bring drill cuttings to the surface, as well as lubricate and cool the
drill bit. The drilling fluid consists of water, water mixed with bentonite clay based powder and/or
liquid polymer. The Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS) for the bentonite and polymer are
available for review.
