i
Lorre Islas
24 September 2004
Page 2
A summary of the analytical results are presented in Table 1. TPHd was detected in all
samples at concentrations ranging from 2.0 mg/kg in CPT-2-3 to 52 mg/kg in CPT-1-3.
Results were not detected, above the Remedial Action Objective (RAO) identified in the F
SMP of 100 mg/kg.
TPHmo was detected in all samples at concentrations ranging between 15 mg/kg in CPT-2-3
to A80 mg/kg in CPT-1-3. Results were not detected above the RAO of 1000 mg/kg.
Lead was detected in all samples at concentrations ranging between 4.4 mg/kg in CPT-1-1 to
630 mg/kg in CPT-2-1. Results were not detected above the RAO of 750 mg/kg.
Arsenic was detected at concentrations ranging from 2.9 in CPT-1-1 to 5.2 mg/kg in CPT-4-
1. Results were not detected above the RAO of 20.mg/kg
PCBs were not detected above laboratory reporting limits in:any samples.
Former Carando Machine Works
During a walkthrough at the Carando site prior to demolition, two steel-lined concrete sumps
and two equipment pits were identified in the building as areas of concern where hazardous
materials were likely used. No other foundation penetrations were observed at the site.
During slab removal, Treadwell &Rollo was present to observe soil conditions and collect
soil samples in these four areas.
On 28 and 29 April 2004, four soil samples, CPT-BOT-4, CPT-BOT2-4,CPT-BOT3-6.5
1
and CPT-BOT5-6.5 were collected from directly beneath the areas of concernat the
locations shown on Figure 1. Samples were analyzed for the following;
• TPHd, TPHmo and TPH as gasoline and stoddard solvent by EPA 8015M
• Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes by EPA Method 8260
With the exception of CPT-BOT-4,the samples did not exceed RAOs for TPHd or TPHmo.
BTEX compounds were not detected above laboratory reporting limits in any of the samples.
Table 1 presents laboratory analytical results.
In CPT-BOT-4 TPH diesel and TPH motor oil exceeded the RAOs of 100 mg/kg andl,000
mg/kg at 270 and 2,200 mg/kg, respectively. The laboratory.stated that the diesel detection
appeared to be carry-over.from heavier-end hydrocarbons in the motor oil range and did not
match the diesel standard. On 5 May 2004,-1.5 feet of soil was removed from the bottom of
the sump and a second sample (CPT-BOT-5.5)was collected at 5.5 feet bgs. Soil excavated
from the below the sump was placed the soil stockpile associated with the UST excavation
and disposed of off-site. In CPT-BOT-5.5 TPH motor oil was detected at 75 mg/kg,below
the RAO of 1,000 mg/kg.
Carando sump sampling Memo
