Project No. JB -314
24 March 2003
Page 9
6.2.2 Cast -In Place Pier/Deep Isolated Footing
As an alternate, the canopy structure and sign/monuments may be supported on
drilled, cast -in place pier foundation or a deep isolated footing system established
on the native soil. The foundation should be designed according to the criteria
presented in Table 4.
Table 4
FOUNDATION DESIGN CRITERIA
CAST -IN PLACE PIER/DEEP ISOLATED FOOTING
Diameter or Width
Depth'
Allowable Bearing Capacity'
Lateral Loads
Criteria
Minimum 18 in.
Minimum of 6 feet into acceptable soil
or as determined by our representative
during drilling.
5,000 psf
See Section 6.3 "Lateral Load Design
Criteria.
1. Depth of foundation embedment is measured from the lowest adjacent soil grade to
the bottom of the pier hole.
2. The recommendations above may be increased by one-third for wind and seismic
loads.
To reduce the potential for differential settlement, we recommend that all
excavations be cleaned of slough and loose material prior to placing steel
reinforcement and concrete.
The foundation should contain steel reinforcement over their entire length with
reinforcement as directed by the Project Structural Engineer according to
applicable Uniform Building Code (UBC) or American Concrete Institute (ACI)
standards. Care should be taken to avoid "mushrooming" at the top of the pier
when placing concrete. We recommend that concrete be placed in the foundation
excavations within 24 to 48 hours after the time of acceptance by our
representative.
We recommend that our representative observe pier drilling or deep excavations
to confirm the soil characteristics of the materials encountered. Depending on the
time of year of drilling and the foundation excavation location, groundwater may
be encountered in the pier hole. In such cases, the excavation should be cleaned
of loose slough and either pumped dry just prior to pouring concrete or tremied
mr,orb,macher Engineering, Inc.
