I ,
L303 South Cherokee Lane TL A91701.01
March 10, 1995 Page 2
L
L It is Twining's opinion that the above-referenced scope of work is the minimum required
to meet the stated objective. This scope of work would expand in the event that PPCs are
detected through the field screening process. The approach and rationale for an expanded
Lscope of work are described in section 4.1.
L3.0 BACKGROUND
A description of the site, the geologic and hydrologic characteristics, and the project history
Lare summarized in the following subsections.
L3.1 Site Description
The site is located at 303 South Cherokee Lane in the central eastern portion of Lodi,
L California (Drawing 1). The site, formerly the Cherokee Service Center, is currently
occupied by Olympic Muffler & Brake (Drawing 2).
L3.2 Geologic and Hydrologic Characteristics
3.2.1 Geology
`. The site is located in the southern portion of the Sacramento Valley which comprises the
northern segment of the larger Great Valley. The Great Valley is an asymmetrical synclinal
L trough interrupted by two major surface cross structures: the Stockton Fault in the Stockton _
Arch and the White Wolf Fault in and south of the Bakersfield Arch.
L The Great'Valley has been filled with a sequence of older to younger alluvium of Pliocene
to Holocene age which overlie sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. These
sedimentary units, in turn, overlie a crystalline basement of Paleozoic and Mesozoic
L metamorphic and igneous rocks. The shallow subsurface geology in the site vicinity consists
of a heterogeneous mix of gravel, sand, silt, and clay (Hackel, 1966).
L Based on field notes taken during the removal of product piping on April 22, 1994, soils
encountered at the site consisted of silty sand and sandy silt in the upper five feet.
L 3.2.2 JWroloa
Sediments containing fresh groundwater are largely unconsolidated silts and sands derived
from river channel, flood plain, and alluvial fan deposits of Pliocene to Recent age (Davis
and others, 1959).
L
L
