L
303 S. Cherokee Lane, Lodi, California TL A91701.01
February 7, 1995 page 2
L
3.0 BACKGROUND
LA description of the site, the geologic and hydrologic characteristics, and the project history
are summarized in the following subsections.
L3.1 Site Descri tion
L The site is located at 303 South Cherokee Lane in the central eastern portion of Lodi,
California (Drawing 1). The site, formerly the Cherokee Service Center, is currently
occupied by Olympic Muffler & Brake (Drawing 2).
L3.2 Geologic and Hydrologic Characteristics
L3.2.1 GeoloQv
The site is located in the southern portion of the Sacramento Valley which comprises the
Lnorthern segment of the larger Great Valley. The Great Valley is an asymmetrical synclinal
trough interrupted by two major surface cross structures: the Stockton Fault in the Stockton
Arch and the White Wolf Fault in and south of the Bakersfield Arch.
L The Great Valle has been filled with a sequence of older to younger alluvium of Pliocene
Y q Y g
L to Holocene age which overlie sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. These
sedimentary units, in turn, overlie a crystalline basement of Paleozoic and Mesozoic
metamorphic and igneous rocks. The shallow subsurface geology in the site vicinity consists
of a heterogeneous mix of gravel, sand, silt, and clay(Hackel, 1966).
LBased on field notes taken during the removal of product piping on April 22 1994, soils
Lencountered at the site consisted of silty sand and sandy silt in the upper five feet.
3.2.2 U-1drolo
1. Sediments containing fresh groundwater are largely unconsolidated silts and sands derived
from river channel, flood plain, and alluvial fan deposits of Pliocene to Recent age (Davis
Land others, 1959).
First encountered groundwater in the site vicinity occurs under unconfined (water table)
L conditions at a depth of approximately 60 feet BSG and flows to the south-southwest
(personal communication with San Joaquin County Public Health Services/Environmental
Health Division)., Local groundwater flow may be influenced by pumping of water wells and
L recharge from various sources. The effect of these influences on groundwater beneath the
site is beyond the scope of this investigation
L
L
