The modification is to collect and
have analyzed a soil sample from beneath the beginning of each leach line and from beneath the end of
each leach line prior to the seepage pit. Collection and analysis of soil samples under the distribution box
(D-box) and each of the two septic tanks is still required. Also, if contaminants are detected in the soil
samples collected at the 'ends' of the leach lines, the collection and analysis of soil samples from below
the 'pits' is required.
The soil samples should be collected 1 to 2 feet under the leach rock base (and D-box, tank, and pits, if
needed) in native soil. Once collected, the soil sample should be undisturbed and preserved immediately
at 4 degrees Celsius and transported to a California Department of Health Services certified laboratory
under chain of custody control. Contaminants detected in the soil samples may require additional
investigation to determine the lateral and vertical extent of the impact.
The primary focus of these requirements is to protect drinking water by identification and evaluation of
subsurface disposal of prohibited substances. As a precaution, the EHD recommends that all domestic
drinking water wells in the immediate area be identified. Should soil sample analyses indicate that the
chemicals introduced into your septic system have migrated out from your leach lines, sampling of these
drinking water wells may be needed to verify if neighboring wells have been impacted.
The EHD will review the work plan as soon as it is submitted and you will be notified in a comment letter
of the results of the review. If you have any additional questions, please contact Michael Infurna at (209)
468-3454.
Sincerely,
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Department
Michael Infurna, Senio REHS Margaret agorio, REHS
UIC-Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
c: Ray Kablanow—Geological Technics, 2741 River Rd, Modesto
