The abandonment methods were discussed with the
regulatory agencies at the November 30, 1994,RPM meeting. Because of observations made
during a recent site visit with Layne-Western Company, some revisions to the original
procedures have been recommended.
Well AG-3
Our original recommendations for abandonment of AG-3,initially outlined in our memo to you
dated September 30, 1994,and revised based on regulatory comments are summarized below:
1. Attempt to spear the column pipe using a modified fishing tool near the top of the bowls
to pull it loose. As discussed previously, the column pipe is currently broken off at about
30 feet bgs. H the attempt to pull it loose is not successful,we will cut off the column
pipe at the top of the pump bowls and remove the column pipe from the well. Sections of
the column pipe would be disposed as clean metal waste.
2. If the pump does not drop within the casing to a depth greater than 300 feet bgs,we will
use a milling bit to clear the bowls from the casing. The condition of the well can be
assessed using the video camera as described in the work plan if the well is clear below
the bowls.
Following discussions with the abandonment subcontractor,Layne-Western Company, during
mobilization for the current effort, the site supervisor believes that additional pulling/fishing
would not be effective since a significant length of the bawls and column pipe wem sand-locked
in place;otherwise previous pulling attempts would have been effective. It was therefore
decided that we would attempt to determine the depth of the sand-lock before proceeding further.
