Statement of Fact •
Defense Depot Tracy
Page 2
The generation of hazardous waste is attributed to
laboratory testing waste, discontinuation of supply
items, spillage, breakage, items exceeding shelf life,
items returned or forwarded from other military
installations, and those wastes generated during the
normal operation and maintenance of the facility. DDTC
is planning to receive hazardous waste from Castle Air
Force Base and may receive hazardous waste from other
military installations in the future.
The facility will have two separate areas for the storage
of containerized hazardous waste. One area is currently
operated and has a maximum capacity of 833 55-gallon
drums. This area is not covered or enclosed. The second
area has not been constructed yet. Current plans are to
have the second storage area completed and operational by
July 1992 . This area will be totally enclosed and will
have separate rooms to segregate incompatible wastes.
The enclosed storage area will have a maximum storage
capacity of 2328 55-gallon drums.
II. Types of Waste
The facility will store the following types of
containerized wastes: petroleum products, spent
solvents, spent acids, paint, and expired
pharmaceuticals. Most of the containers will have a
capacity of 55 gallons or less.
The facility is prohibited from handling or storing the
following types of waste:
A. Wastes in bulk.
B. Forbidden and Class A explosives as defined in
Sections 173 . 51 and 173 .53 , Title 49 , Code of
Federal Regulations (examples: nitroglycerine,
firecrackers, high explosives, ammunition for
weapons or rockets, blasting caps) .
C. Mixed waste which is defined as a waste which
contains both a radioactive component subject to the
Atomic Energy Act and a hazardous component that is
either listed as a hazardous waste in Subpart D of
40 CFR Part 261 or exhibits any of the hazardous
characteristics identified in Subpart C 40 CFR
Part 261.
