The work plan describes soil vapor and ground water
sampling activities planned to investigate Solid Waste Management Units (SWMU) 20,
and a section of the former Industrial Waste Pipeline (IWPL) known as SWMU 33.
Warehouse 10 is the site of a former aboveground solvent tank (SWMU 20) also
containing a former paint spray booth, both connected to the IWPL. Previous soil
investigations in 1997 at SWMU 20 and SWMU 33 indicate that (TCE) Tricholorethene
leaked either from the tank or IWPL, resulting in soil, soil vapor, and ground water
contamination. Institutional Controls remain in place for SWMU 20 and SWMU 33 due
to contamination left in place underneath building foundations and portions of the IWPL.
Due to demolition activities planned for Warehouse 10, the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers performed a supplemental investigation of portions of SWMU 20 and
SWMU 33 in December 2007. The investigation performed eight borings and collected
soil samples approximately four to five feet below the top of the concrete slab.
Analytical results showed TCE concentrations in soil ranging from 28 to 260 ug/kg.
Pesticides and motor oil were also detected near an existing drain grate.
DTSC has reviewed the work plan and presents the following
comments/recommendations:
9 Printed on Recycled Paper
