As you are aware,the
boundary piezometers are critical to the DDJC-Tracy monitoring program and future groundwater
modeling efforts for the site. Mr. Harlan Knoll of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Division (SJCEHD)has been contacted regarding the destruction of the piezometers.He has requested
that a memorandum be submitted to the SJCEHD to determine if the method used by Black and Veatch
to abandon piezometers PZ4,PZ5, and PZ7 during construction of the water transmission pipeline along
Bird Road is acceptable by the county. Mr. Knoll has requested a summary of any groundwater
sampling that was done near the piezometers to verify whether groundwater is contaminated in the area,
piezometer construction information, lithology information on where the piezometers are screened, the
method of abandonment used by the contractor that installed the pipeline,a map of the area, and other
pertinent information to help the county perform its review of the abandonment activities.
To facilitate the SJCEHD's request for review of the piezometer abandonment,URS is including the
following information in this memorandum:
• URS/Radian CPT Investigation Report from groundwater sampling conducted along Bird
and Lovely Roads, east and north of the DDJC-Tracy Depot,respectively;
• Piezometer installation and construction information;
• Map of the boundary piezometer locations and damaged piezometers;
• Summary letter from Black and Veatch that describes the destruction of the piezometers;
and
• Map of the pipeline section being constructed as part of the South County Water Supply
Program.
URS Group, Inc.
Crown Corporate Center
2870 Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 300
Sacramento,CA 95833
Tel:916.679.2000
Fax:916.679.2900 K:\W process\D0701\Tracy1PZ DeswctioMSlCE M Mesno.doc
