Starling
U.S.Army Corps of Engineers
Engineering and Support Center,Huntsville
ATTN: CEHNC-IS-FS
4820 University Square
Huntsville,AL 35816-1822
SUBJECT: Document Submission Draft Letter Report,DDJC-Tracy East Annex
Groundwater Investigation (DACA87-95-D-W1r1XM7-039)
Dear Mr. Starling:
The purpose of this draft letter report is to document data obtained from the cone penetrometer
testing(CPT)groundwater sampling effort conducted east of the Defense Distribution Depot San
Joaquin, California(DDJC),Tracy(DDJC-Tracy)Annex,in October 2001 and to make recom-
mendations for the installation of groundwater monitoring wells as needed. The sampling and
analyses were performed as described in the memorandum titled Second Revision of Recommenda-
tion for Additional Groundwater Sampling to Define TCE Extent, DDJC-Tracy Off-Annex,dated 9
February 2001.Within this letter report are results from groundwater sampling along Banta Road
east of the Annex, adjacent to the Alvarez property;this sampling was recommended in the
memorandum titled Evaluation of Need for Additional Groundwater Data from Alvarez Property
East of Banta Road, dated 18 July 2001.Attached Figures 1 and 2 depict Upper and Middle Horizon
groundwater data, respectively, from the October 2001 URS investigation, data from previous CPT
sampling efforts, and quarterly groundwater monitoring data. Table 1 presents the analytes detected
in CPT samples from the October 2001 investigation.Attachment A to this report contains labora-
tory data and a summary of the assessment of data quality; Attachment B contains CPT logs from
the investigation.
Groundwater samples were collected from CPT borings completed in the Upper and Middle
Horizons east of the Annex to determine the extent of groundwater contamination east and northeast
of the Operable Unit(OU) 1 groundwater extraction system The following sampling was conducted
as part of the investigation.
• Groundwater samples were obtained from three previously identified potable wells on private
properties north and east of the DDJC-Tracy Annex: one well,PW 10,was sampled; a well at
5208 11th Street had no power connection and could not be sampled; and one well,PW 7,was
already being sampled as part of the groundwater monitoring program.
• Groundwater samples were obtained from seven CPT borings(CP0760 through CP0766)in the
right-of-way along Bird Road and Lovely Road as part of a separate effort to provide data to
support the Waterways Experiment Station(WES)groundwater modeling effort. Permanent
piezometers also were installed.
URS Corporation
Crown Corporate Center
2870 Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 300
Sacramento, CA 95833
Tel:916.679.2000
Fax:916.679.2900 K:\02237\T-Ltr Rpt\East Annex Letter Report.doc
