29 October 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0235
measurements will be considered impacted. At the conclusion of the excavation activities, the soil
stockpile(s) will be covered with plastic.
The open excavation area will be surrounded by temporary fencing. No AGE or subcontractor
personnel will be allowed into any excavation greater than 5 feet bsg without proper excavation
shoring and/or sloping techniques in-practice.
Should ground water be encountered during excavation, a berm will be constructed using clean
overburden and lined with plastic sheeting. The berm area will be utilized to contain saturated soil.
Additionally, submersible pumps will be used to de-water the excavation. Extracted ground water
will be stored in an above-ground poly tank pending disposal.
5.2. EXCAVATION SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples collected from the base and sidewalls of the excavation will be obtained using a
backhoe or excavator. Sol] samples will be collected from the bucket of the excavating equipment
by pressing a 3-inch long by 2-inch diameter brass sleeve into the excavated soil material. The
exposed ends of the sample sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
Soil samples will be collected from soil stockpiles by digging approximately one foot into the soil
stockpile. Soil samples will be collected by hand sampling methods using a stainless steel or carbon
steel trowel, or by pressing a brass sampling sleeve into the soil stockpile.
Following sample collection, each sample sleeve will be properly preserved as described above and
will be labeled with the boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials.Appropriately sealed
and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-
custody procedure to a DHS-certified laboratory.
5.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water after being
washed with a solution of Alconox. All down-hole drilling and sampling equipment will be pressure
washed prior to starting each boring.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
