Mr. Mark Peterson
10967 Copperopolis Road, Stockton - 2 - 21 June 2001
Among various other uses, the chemical 1,2-DCA is found in solvents; paint, varnish, and finish
removers; wetting and penetrating agents, and as a lead scavenger in antiknock gasoline (Spectrum
chemical fact sheet, http://www.speclab.com). 1,2-DCA is listed as a carcinogen, and the California
Department of Health Services has set the drinking water standard at 0.5 micrograms per liter(µg/1) for
municipal water supply. Neither the State of California nor the San Joaquin County Public Health
Services regulates domestic water supply wells. However, based on the confirmed detection of 1,2-DCA
in your domestic well, we suggest that you:
1. Use bottled water for drinking and cooking, or
2. Utilize a carbon filtration system to filter your water prior to use.
According to the San Joaquin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the groundwater
flow direction in the vicinity of the former Countryside Market is westward towards the City of
Stockton. Based on the lateral distance from the former Countryside Market to your property, and the
groundwater flow direction, Board staff do not believe that contamination from the former Countryside
Market is the cause of chemical impacts to your domestic well.
If you have well construction details for your well, we would appreciate a copy of the documents. If you
have any questions, please contact the San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental
Health Division at (209) 468-3420, or call Many Hartzell at(916)255-3115.
Marty Hartzell
Associate Engineering Geologist
Attachments
cc: Ms.Margaret Lagorio, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division, Stockton
File: Countryside Market, 10848 Copperopolis Road, Stockton
