Soil samples will be obtained at the depth which exhibits the greatest evidence
of petroleum impacted soil,as determined through field observations. If there is no evidence of
petroleum impacted soil, the soil sample will be obtained at a depth of 5 feet below ground
surface. A grab groundwater sample will be collected from temporary well casing in each boring
location.
As per CPL'S Technical Approach to Site Evaluation and Decision-Making,Old Valley Pipeline
Site-Central Valley(March 20, 1997;"Consistent Approach'),the soil and groundwater samples
will be analyzed for the following constituents as described below:
• The soil samples will be analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes
(BTEX)using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)Method 8020,polyaromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs)using EPA Method 8310 or 8270, and total extractable petroleum
hydrocarbons (TEPH)using EPA Method 8015M quantified against crude oil.
• The groundwater samples will be analyzed for BTEX using EPA Method 8020,PAHs using
Methods 8310 or 8270,total purgable petroleum hydrocarbons (TPPH)using EPA Method
8015M quantified against gasoline, and TEPH using EPA Method 8015M quantified against
diesel.
In addition to the analyses listed for groundwater samples in our Consistent Approach,CPL will
have the groundwater samples analyzed for methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) as requested by
