' R9 KLEINFELDER
4 ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED
During grading operations for upcoming residential development at the site, Teichert
Construction observed stained soils with a petroleum-type odor during the week of June 18,
' 2001. Fitzpatrick Homes contacted Kleinfelder to assess this concern.
Kleinfelder conducted a limited soil and groundwater assessment of the subject site between June
' 20, 2001 and on July 6, 2001. During this time Kleinfelder collected a total of 44 soil samples and
4 groundwater samples. The soil samples were collected primarily from two excavations, potholes
and temporary well borings located near the former R&B Trucking maintenance shop. A soil
' sample was also collected beneath surficial soil staining noted near the center of the site. Forty(40)
of the 44 soil samples and each of four groundwater samples were analyzed for petroleum
constituents. Additional analyses including metals, oxygenates, PCBs and volatile and semi-
volatile organic compounds were conducted from selected soil and groundwater samples.
Petroleum affected soil noted in the two larger excavation areas (SE-13 and LE-C) appears to be
located beneath and in the vicinity of a former maintenance shop, oil UST and waste oil AST and
containment unit of the previous owner, R&B Trucking Company. A former R&B tank farm was
' also located on the western portion of the site (see Plate 2 for approximate locations). The
approximate locations of these previous R&B structures depicted on Plate 2 were verified by Mr.
Shawn Fitzpatrick of Fitzpatrick Homes. Mr. Shawn Fitzpatrick was able to observe the site prior
' to demolition of these former structures, while Fitzpatrick Homes was in the process of acquiring
ownership of the site.
' During this assessment the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Department,
Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) was contacted for oversight and comments. Although
to date PHS/EHD has not agreed to provide official oversight, Mr. Harlin Knoll of PHS/EHD
' visited the site and reviewed a workplan for soil and groundwater sampling. W. Knoll has also
offered comments regarding placement of temporary monitoring wells and analyses to be
conducted.
' 4.1 SOIL EXCAVATION AND SAMPLING
June 20. 2001 Samuline
' On June 20, 2001 a Kleinfelder project geologist visited the site to assess stained soil located in
two areas located near the western and central portion of the site. The areas assessed included
Shallow Excavation A (SE-A) and Small Excavation B (SE-B). See Plate 2 for locations. Mr.
' Shawn Fitzpatrick of Fitzpatrick Homes was present during this field work. Fitzpatrick Homes
subcontracted the excavation services directly on this date.
' 20-4341-1LEO 1/2011R959 Page 10 of 31
Copyright 2001,Kleinfelder,Inc. August 21,2001
