KLEINFELDER
Approximately 10-yards of stained soil was removed from SE-A. The excavation measured
about 17 x 20-feet with a maximum depth of approximately 20-inches. A single soil sample
'
SSI-20" was collected in the central portion of this excavation at a depth of about 20-inches.
The sample was submitted to a state certified laboratory for total extractable hydrocarbons as
referenced to diesel and oil.
' Approximately 75 yards of stained soil with a petroleum odor was also removed from SE-B on
' June 20, 2001. This excavation was located on proposed residential Lot 23 near the western
border of the subject site. This excavation appeared to be located about 40 feet west of the
southwest comer of the former R&B Trucking maintenance shop. This excavation measured
approximately 14 feet by 28 feet by 5 feet deep. No stained soil or petroleum odors remained in
the excavation except for an approximate 10-foot section of sidewall located near the northwest
portion of the excavation. Additional soil could not be excavated in this area due to proximity of
' a boundary fence.
A total of eight soil samples were collected in this area, six confirmation soil samples and two
' four-point composite samples. Five sidewall and one bottom confirmation samples were
collected from within the excavation. The two four-point composite soil samples were collected
from the excavated soil. The confirmation soil samples were analyzed for total extractable
' hydrocarbons as referenced to diesel and oil. The stockpiled soil from this excavation was
analyzed for extractable and purgeable hydrocarbons, oil and grease, volatile and semi-volatile
organic compounds and five metals (cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel and zinc).
' June 21 through July 3, 2001 Sampling
' On June 21, 2001, during grading activities additional stained soil was found at the subject site.
Kleinfelder was again contacted to assess the soil in this new area. Between June 21 and July 3,
' 2001 Kleinfelder collected 27 soil samples in this area which was designated Large Excavation C
(LE-Q. Kleinfelder collected an initial soil sample in stained soil in this area on June 21. On
June 22, 2001, Kleinfelder subcontracted RAH Environmental of Loomis, California to begin
' excavation of this new area. A track-mounted excavator was utilized for the work.
Three soil samples were collected on June 22, 2001 to assess the vertical extent of potential
' contamination. The samples were collected in the central area of the excavation on this date at
depths of 4'/z, 7 and 9-feet below ground surface (sample numbers 21976, 21977 and 21978
shown on Plate 2). Groundwater seepage was noted just below the 9-foot sample. Stained soil
' and hydrocarbon odors were noted at depths ranging from about 2 to 9-feet below ground
surface. A lighter olive gray color was noted at the 9-foot depth without obvious petroleum-like
odor. Excavation of contaminated soil continued through this day without observing clean side-
' walls.
Mr. Harlin Knoll of PHS/EHD visited the site on June 22, 2001 to observe excavation activities
' of Excavation LEC and to observe Excavation SE-B. Mr. Knoll suggested that at least one soil
sample in contaminated soil from each excavation SE-B and LEC should be run for PCBs, and
' that the O&G analyses (by SM 5520E) should be included in the analytical suite for soil analyses.
20-4341-11.E01/201IR959 Page 11 of 31
Copyright 2001,Kleinfelder,Inc.
