' KLEINFELDER
Other additional comments included running the stockpile samples and or discrete contaminated
samples for a more comprehensive suite of analyses so the type of contaminant could be
' assessed. Mr. Knoll commented that follow-up confirmation sampling could then be done based
on constituents of concern based on evaluation of the more comprehensive analyses of
contaminated soil.
' Excavation activities continued the following week on June 25 and 26 and on July 3, 2001.
' Kleinfelder personnel and Mr. Shawn Fitzpatrick observed excavation activities during the
excavation activities on these dates. The first set of five side-wall confirmation samples were
collected during excavation activities on June 26, 2001. Six additional sidewall samples were
' collected on June 27, 2001. At this time the excavation was irregular in shape and measured
approximately 120 feet by 70 feet by 9 feet deep. Soil discoloration and petroleum odors were no
longer noted along the eastern and western side-walls. A previously existing wind row of soil
near the northern boundary of the excavation prevented further excavation of discolored soil with
petroleum odors to the north. Discolored soil and petroleum odor were still noted along the
southeastern boundary of the site.
On June 27, 2001 four exploratory potholes were excavated, two north of the excavation beneath
an existing wind row of soil and one west and one south of the excavation. The potholes were
' advanced to assess the potential extent of contamination based on field observations. No soil
discoloration was noted in exploratory potholes EPH-3 and EPH-4 located west and south,
respectively, of the excavation. The two potholes located north of the large excavation were
' designated EPH-1 and EPH-2. A small band of discolored and odiferous soil approximately one
foot thick was noted in exploratory pot-hole EPH-1 about three feet above groundwater
' (approximately seven feet below ground surface. No soil discoloration was noted in exploratory
potholes EPH-2. Exploratory pothole EPH-1 was located about 20 north of the northern edge of
the excavation. EPH-2 was located about 40 feet north of the large excavation.
' The final day of excavation activities resumed on July 3, 2001. The excavation was extended to
the south and southeast until discolored soils with petroleum odors were no longer noted. In
' summary, field observations indicated that contaminated soil had been removed to the east, west
and southerly directions. The excavation extended vertically to near or at groundwater. The final
excavation dimensions were approximately 120 feet by 90 feet by 9 feet deep. Discolored soils
and petroleum odors were still noted along the northern sidewall of the excavation in proximity
to the pre-existing soil wind row. Four additional potholes (PH1 through PH4) were excavated
along the perimeter to the north, east and southeast. Confirmation soil samples were collected
' and analyzed in the event analytical data was not consistent with field observations.
Stained and odiferous soils from the larger excavation appeared to extended to groundwater in
' areas at a depth of about 9-feet below grade. As a result Fitzpatrick Homes asked Kleinfelder to
assess groundwater conditions around the larger excavation. Four temporary wells were installed
' in proximity to SE-13 and LE-C. Soil and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from
the temporary wells.
' 20-4341-11.EO1/2011R959 Page 12 of 31
Copyright 2001,Kleinfelder,Inc. August 21,2001
