PRIMEX TECHNOLOGIES • •
Corrective Measures Study Workplan, EPA ID No. CAD 000 626 762
May 2000
6.1 Step-Out Sample Collection
At SWMU #21, soil samples will be collected using a direct push drilling rig or a drill rig
equipped with hollow-stem augers. Samples will be collected every 2'/z feet starting at
21h feet bgs and terminating at 15 feet bgs. Samples will be collected in California split
spoon sampler equipped with 6-inch by 2-inch diameter brass 6-in sleeves. The ends
of the sleeve selected for sampling will be sealed using Teflon TM film and plastic caps
to minimize loss of volatiles. The samples will be labeled and logged onto a Chain of
custody form and placed in coolers at approximately 4° Centigrade prior to daily
delivery to the laboratory performing the analyses.
Equipment in contact with the soil will be decontaminated prior to each use. Sampling
procedures, including sample documentation, QA/QC, and decontamination protocols,
would be commensurate with the RFI Workplan and are summarized in Section 6.3.
Based on historic reports, groundwater is not expected to be encountered during
drilling. If bedrock is encountered, drilling would be terminated at that depth.
As in the RFI WP, the step-out samples will be a phased analytical program, whereby
certain samples are identified for immediate analysis upon delivery to the laboratory
and other samples are held pending the results of the shallower samples. The soil
cuttings will be placed on VisqueenTm, covered and added to the soil stockpile during
excavation activities.
6.2 Confirmation Soil Sample Collection
CE technicians will collect confirmation soil samples at the bottom and sidewalls of the
open excavations using hand-held equipment (e.g., slide hammer or hand auger) or if
necessary, samples will be collected from the backhoe bucket that has scooped soil
from the designated area to be sampled. If sampling from an excavator bucket is
required, the upper 6-inches of soil in the bucket will be removed and a brass sleeve
driven into the soil in the bucket until full.
Prior to sample collection, the sampling equipment will be decontaminated using a
scrub brush and a solution of water and surfactant (e.g. trisodium phosphate).
Decontaminated equipment will be double rinsed and air dried prior to reuse. Samples
will be collected in brass sleeves (6 inches in length, 2 inches in diameter), logged,
capped Teflon sheets and tight-fitting plastic end caps, labeled, entered onto a Chain
of Custody form and placed in coolers at approximately 4° Centigrade prior to daily
delivery to the laboratory performing the analyses.
6.3 Sample Analysis
The RFI sample results indicated heavy range hydrocarbons, thereby indicating
analysis of soil samples for 0&G.
