k'q KLEINFEL®ER
4 FIELD WORK
A total of 33 soil samples were collected in four areas including a Debris Area, adjacent
to five reported dry wells, near an above ground storage tank (AST) and the grass and
dirt areas of the interior Race Track Area. Twenty two (22) of the 33 soil samples were
analyzed for various analytical suites and analytes including metals, petroleum
' constituents, volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds.
Sampling methodology included hand augering, pushprobe borings and utilization of a
backhoe for test pit exploration (Debris Area). Hand auger sampling was conducted in
' the interior track area and pushprobe borings were advanced adjacent to the dry wells
and AST area.
' A relatively large excavation west of the track was generated during construction of the
race track stands in 1947 and fill material and debris was subsequently used to backfill
the excavation. The five reported dry wells are located in three areas including a
retention basin, at the base of the western stands and the interior of the race track. An
existing AST (convault) is located north of the track on a secondary containment
concrete pad (See Plate 2). The following is a summary of field activities relevant to
' Kleinfelder's investigation of these areas:
' 4.1 DRY WELL AND AST AREA
' A total of 6 pushprobes were advanced, five adjacent to five dry wells and one adjacent to
a high octane gasoline AST.
' 4.1.1. Permitting and Pre-Field Activities
Kleinfelder submitted a boring application to San Joaquin County Public Health Services
' Department Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) for the pushprobe borings. The
resulting permit was also utilized for the hand auger borings in the interior track area per
verbal conversation with county inspector Mr. Mike Infurna. An approved (push probe)
' boring permit was obtained prior to initiating the field activities. Underground Services
Alert (USA) was contacted at least 48 hours prior to field activities. For a copy of the
' approved boring permit, please refer to Appendix D.
4.1.2. Field Activites
' Six pushprobe borings P1 through P6 were advanced on July 5, 2005 by Enprobe of
Oroville California. Pushprobes P1 through P5 were advanced adjacent to the dry wells
' and P6 was advanced adjacent to the gasoline AST. The pushprobes were located
within approximately 3 feet of each of the dry wells. Pushprobes P1 and P2 were
located adjacent to the two dry wells located in a retention basin, pushprobes P4 and
58671.E02/ST05R1127/DH:ly Page 9 of 22
©2005 Kleinfelder, Inc.
