3.0 SITE HISTORY AND LAND USE
The history of the site, including previous land use, has been compiled based on information
available from historical aerial photographs, historical Sanborn fire insurance maps, building
permit records, and information provided to Geosystem by Bank of the West Aerial
photographs spanning the period 1928 to 1949, belonging to the Fairchild
Aerial Photography Collection, were reviewed in the Department of Geology at Whittier
College in Whittier, California. More recent aerial photographs, spanrung the period from
August 14, 1937 through 1983, were reviewed at the Surveyors Office of the San Joaquin
County Public Works Department in Stockton Copies of Sanborn fire insurance maps
dated 1950 and 1972 were obtained directly from Sanborn Mapping and Geographic
Information Service in New York.
The earliest available aerial photograph of the site area was taken in 1928 Pershing
Avenue and Country Club Boulevard were visible in this photograph, as was the residential
area to the east and a few scattered farm houses and buildings to the west Pershing
Avenue and Country Club Boulevard appear to have been unpaved and very narrow The
subject site appears to have been a fallow agricultural plot at the time
A photograph taken m August 14, 1937 shows paving underway for Country Club Boulevard
Also, several small orchards are visible next to some of the farm buildings on the west side
of Pershing Avenue.
By June 25, 1940, residential development was beginning to encroach into the agricultural
areas Specifically, a residence had been constructed directly across Country Club Boulevard
from the site. To the west, whole blocks had been developed for residential use The
subject site, however, remained an undeveloped, vacant/fallow agricultural lot
The next availablehoto a h is undated but features p gr p t es a notice to the effect that it contains
information affecting the national defense of the United States Accordingly, Geosystem
3-1
G31MICYSTETV
Consultants, Inc
