are located in Franklin Street near the Kwikee Foods property line (Figure 2). Recently, drilling has
progressed northward along Franklin Street, and four wells have been drilled at the intersection of
Franklin Street and Eads Avenue (Figure 3).
Data from the wells onChevron property and in Franklin Street indicate that the groundwater
flow direction is to the east or northeast and that a contaminant plume extends eastward from the
Chevron site onto the Kwikee Mart property. Whether the Chevron site is the sole source of
contamination or whether the Kwikee site is an additional source is uncertain, and therefore the
owner of the Kwikee Foods property has installed three wells on his property (Figure 2). Significant
soil contamination would be expected if either the piping or tanks were a contaminant source, but
little or no soil contamination was encountered in vadose-zone samples from these wells when they
were drilled in 1990 and 1994. However, high concentrations of gasoline have been detected in
groundwater samples from all three wells on three occasions (Table 1). The groundwater results
indicate that the extent of the contaminant plume to the east and northeast has not been delineated,
and are inconsistent with the soil results. This may favor the Chevron site as the source of the
contamination, and it is our understanding that the consultant for the Chevron site has recently
sampled the wells on the Kwikee property and is awaiting the results.
3.0 PROPOSED ASSESSMENT
3.1 Drilling Methods and Boring Locations
Based on the spacing, configuration and laboratory results of the existing wells in the vicinity of the
site, several additional borings will be needed to delineate the downgradient extent of groundwater
contamination to regulatory satisfaction. Data are lacking on the east side of Franklin Street
between MW-7 and MW-12, behind the Kwikee Mart store north of KF-1 and KF-2, east of the
dispenser island, and east of KF-2. Therefore, five new boring locations, including four new wells,
are proposed at this time and are shown in Figure 3. Three of the five borings will be drilled with a
standard truck-mounted auger rig. The well in the northeast corner of the property must be drilled
with a limited access rig because of narrow access along the north and east sides of the building.
The other boring behind the building will probably also be drilled with the limited-access auger rig,
but could be drilled with a pickup-truck-mounted geoprobe.
Drill cuttings will be stored in 55-gallon drums pending laboratory analysis.
The depth of the borings will depend on the depth to groundwater when drilling takes place. In the
past, groundwater has varied between 15 and 20 feet in depth.
3.2 Sample Collection
In four of the five borings, soil samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals, beginning at a depth of
5 feet. The samples will be collected with a split-spoon sampler loaded with brass sample sleeves,
and the middle sample will be preserved with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps and placed in a
cooled ice chest. The bottom sample will be extruded into a plastic bag and screened for the
