Gary Relents, Area Engineer MAR 26 1%55
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION ENYIRUMENTAL HEALTH
3201 S Street FERW/sWICM
Sacramento, California 95816-7090
Dear Mr . Relents:
Regarding our Autoclave Oil Leak we are submitting this
information to clarify some of the points we discussed in our
meeting of March 21 , 1985 .
Enclosed is a larger drawing of the leak site showing where the
original backhoe holes were dug. We took grab samples from all
of these holes immediately after digging and left them to settle
overnight for a qualitative observation as to the presence of
oil . A better determination was actually made by directly
observing the reflection of light from the water in the holes.
The water table was about ten feet . Using these methods we made
the following observations:
Holes 1 ,3 and 5 had a large amount of floating oil visible.
Holes 4 and 6 had an obvious lite film of oil visible.
Holes 2 and 9 had a very lite sheen of oil visible.
Holes 11 and 12 were inconclusive, a very lite sheen was
suspected but thought to be contamination from the backhoe
shovel .
Holes 7,8 and 10 were free of visible oil .
Additional samples were taken of holes 2 and 4 and sent to
Engineering-Science for analysis. 2.0 mg/l G & 0 were found in
hole 2 and 3.5 mg/l in hole 4. We also took 2 samples from our
well 10-E which is about 40 feet west of hole 4. We attempted to
draw a surface sample by lowering a tygon vacuum line; the results
were .25 mg/1 . A pumped sample from the well gave results of
1 .2 mg/1 . We have no confidence in either result because the
tygon tubing used in the first probably would adsorb most oil and
the second sample was taken in a new bottle not properly washed
which may have had a waxy residue contaminate the sample. New
samples are to be taken .
I discussed several points of concern with Bob Castle of WCC and
he made the following comments:
1 . He will get some information together for you regarding the EM
survey he took of the area.
2. A hollow stem auger will be used to drill the monitor wells.
3. Screening of the wells will be done of at least the bottom 5
feet .
4. All of the wells dug will be capped and cemented.
5 . Selected wells will be bailed for the Method 601 volatile
aromatics.
500 East Louise P.O. Box 128 Lathrop, California 95330 Telephone 209 858-5151 TWX 510-762-6630
