4.2 Drilling
Spectrum personnel will be responsible for performing the drilling and adhering to
standard safety procedures. The exclusion zone for the work area will be a 30-foot
radius around the drill rig. Only authorized personnel will be permitted within the
exclusion zone. No smoking will be permitted within the exclusion zone.
4.3 Noise
Noise may be a hazard in the vicinity of the work area. Hearing protection will be
wom when working near heavy equipment or loud mechanical equipment.
4.4 Heat Stress
Heat stress will be a hazard during hot weather and will be intensified when workers
are in protective clothing. Workers will be required to take breaks, as needed, to
prevent heat stress and to consume adequate quantities of liquid.
5.0 - AMBIENT AIR MONITORLNG/RESPIRATORREOUIREMENTS
a. Breathing zone vapor at detectable concentrations at the work area, as detected by an
OVA, requires site personnel to use a respirator with organic vapor cartridges and
goggles while working in the exclusion zone. The OSHA-PEL for benzene is 1.0 ppm
(see Table 5-1 below).
b. Breathing zone vapor at detectable concentrations requires site manager to monitor the
site perimeter (concentrating in the down wind direction).
C. Breathing zone vapor concentrations that reach or exceed 10 ppm at the work area, as
detected by the OVA, requires site personnel to use a full face respirator with organic
vapor cartridges while working in the exclusion zone.
d. Breathing zone vanor concentrations that reach or exceed 50 Porn at the work area, as
detected by the OVA, requires site activities to be stopped until concentrations
decrease. Site manager should continuously monitor site perimeter.
e. If breathing zone vapor concentrations are detected at the site perimeter, the site
manager shall monitor the perimeter at 30 minute intervals.
f. If the vapor concentrations continue to reach or exceed a value of 10 ppm at the site
perimeter for 15 minutes, work activities shall be stopped. Appropriate regulatory
agencies should be contacted (see contact sheet). Site manager shall continue to
monitor conditions until levels are reduced to background conditions.
