(GTI).
In ReRAP1, your consultant proposed to operate the soil vapor extraction system for two
to four 8-hour periods and to collect as many as two vapor samples during each 8-hour
test run for laboratory analysis; the purpose of the proposed work is to obtain data to
design the air (extracted vapor) treatment portion of the soil vapor extraction system. It
was proposed to analyze the soil vapor samples by:
• EPA Method TO-3 for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPH-g) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes; and by
• EPA method TO-14 for the five fuel oxygenates, 1,2-dichloroethane, and
ethylene dibromide.
The EHD has been informed that the latter analytical method should be TO-14A. With
the provision that the proper analytical methods be utilized for the potential chemicals of
concern, the EHD approves the proposed scope of work in ReRAP1 as necessary and
adequate [Health & Safety Code (H&S) Section 25299.37(c)(3)]. To better evaluate the
system response to these short test runs, the EHD recommends that PID readings be
taken hourly during each test.
In ReRAP2, GTI responded to the EHD inquiry regarding the potential effect on aquifer
porosity and permeability if ORC Advanced were to be injected into the proposed 45
borings to stimulate biological activity; GTI also provided the design details for a 2-week
soil vapor extraction (SVE) and insitu air sparging (IAS) pilot test. GTI provided
information on the ORC Advanced that addressed the EHD concern, but the injection
pattern design was not satisfactorily explained; the EHD wishes to be assured that the
ORC Advanced will be distributed to maximize its impact on the contaminant mass in
groundwater. GTI determined more assessment is required to achieve such optimization
WP Approval Letter 101608.doc
