Eleanor Ratliff, REHS
San Joaquin County Environmental Health
PO Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
RE: Addendum to work plan to investigate the extent of the
contaminated soil beneath the excavation and the product line
trenches, Regal Station 604, 1448 N. E1 Dorado Strecc., Stockton,
California.
Dear Ms. Ratliff:
As to our phone conversation and FAX of January 11, 1990, and
communication with qtr. Dave Strickler, District Manager OSHA-Cal
on January 12, 1990, I have revised our procedures for sampling
the tank excavation with a hand auger/sampler. I have also
enclosed five figures that are taken from the Preliminary
Assessment Report (Figures 6A, 6A-30, 6B, 6B-30, and 8) . Figure 8
. shows the proposed locations of the sample borings, Figures 6A and
6A-30 show the total petroleum soil contamination contours at the
15 and 30 foot levels respectively and Figures 6B and CB-30 show
the benzene so13 contamination contours at the 15 and 30 foot
levels respectivley.
I have also enclosed the insurance certificates you requested.
HAND AUGERING AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Based upon the information provided by the tank excavation
sampling and the sampling of the exploratory borings for the
monitor wells, soil contamination seems to be confined to the area
directly beneath the excavation, specifically beneath tank
excavation samples T3B and T4A, see Figures 6A, 6A-30, 6B, and 6B-
30.
To more fully characterize the soil contamination associated with
the tank excavation, WEGE intends to hand auger and sample the
base of the excavation. WEGE personnel WILL NOT go into the
excavation or STAND NEAR any area that appears unstable (undercut,
sloughing, etc. ) . The boring/sampling will be performed from the
surface with extensions that will enable us to reach the
excavation surface and perform the sampling. This investigation
will be performed using a two person team. The person doing the
actual boring will be secured with a safety harness to the canopy
- supports of the pump island or store and/or the bumper of the
equipment truck. The other person on the team is the geologist
* 1.
