and safety officer who will log the borings and take vapor
t readings with a hand held photoionizing detector (PID) , see Figure
8 for boring/sample locations.
The sampling of the borings Within the excavation will commence at
the 20 foot depth and samples will be obtained in 5 foot intervals
to the 35 foot depth. In order to safely perform the boring and
sampling the driller will stand at the surface of the excavation
only in areas that inspections indicate are stable. The driller
will be secured, using a safety harness, to an immobile object
(island canopy support or bumper of the service truck) similarly
to the drilling safety methods. The hand auger/sampled boring
will be drilled at an angle that will prevent the driller from
leaning out over the excavation. This angle will be measured with
a brunton to correct the angled hole to vertical depth.
To economically determine the vertical extent of petroleum
contamination associated with the product lines, a 4" diameter
hand auger with sampler and driver will be utilized, see figure 8.
The holes will be hand augered in five foot intervals, the auger
there will be withdrawn and a sampler containing one VOx6'° sterile
braes sleeve will be placed at the base of the hole and hand
driven to obtain a sleeved sample for certified laboratory
analysis. This procedure will be accomplished from outside the
excavation, as outlined above.
The sampling of the borings within the product line trenches will
commence at the 10 foot depth and samples will be obtained in 5
foot intervals until screening with the PID indicates that the
soil is clean.
DESTROYING THE BORINGS
The sample borings produced in the product line trenches will be
backfilled with neat cement by pouring from the surface. The
exploratory borings produced by Hogate Drilling showed that the
soil has enough clay and silt for the holes to stay open.
The sample borings produced in the excavation will be part of the
over excavation process and will be left open, not be backfilled.
Again let as assure you that ..a "=`" not qo into the excavation,
we will perform our borings from the ourface with extensions that
will enable us to reach the excavation surface and perform the
sampling. Also this investigation will Le performed with a two
person team; one doing the actual boring the other is the safety
officer who will also log the bo-:i g and take vapor readings with
a hand held photoionizing detector (PID) .
EBCAVATED BOIL AND RINSATE HANDLING
All soil produced from the hand angered borings will be Placed
with the SP1-A excavated soil pile and covered with a polyethylene
liner.
. 2
