The rig was then moved to HBH #6, using the same procedures as
descrubed above. Plate IV gives details of the work performed.
At the completion of the augering operations, the three holes
were filled with a cement-bentonite slurry under the direction of
H. knoll of the County EHD. The samples were transported to the
laboratory by the geologist under proper chain of custody, with
instructions to test for BTEX.
The results of the laboratory analysis, (Exhibits A, S. & C. )
revealed that very minor amounts of Toluene were detected in
several of the samples; Benzene, Ethlybenzene and Xylene were all
below detection limits. Utilizing the Environmental Fate
worksheet, (Table 2-4, ) from the LUFT Manual , it was determined
that the levels of Toluene as measured are all below cleanup
levels; refer to Exhibits D F & F for copies of those
worksheets.
An analysis of the soil profiles, contaminant levels and
locations suggests that there may have been other sources for the
residual Toluene that was detected. The contamination found in
HBH #41 5, & 6, may have been caused by the dumping of paint
thinners, solvents, or a variety of other substances in the open
field. According to available records, that parcel has been
vacant for many years, which would make it a good site for
disposal of a variety of wastes. A main line of the SF railroad
borders the property on the west; there is no way of estimating
the amounts and types of materials that would be leaked or
spilled from that activity. The fact that only Toluene was
detected in those three borings leads credence to the possibility
that there may have been other sources for the contamination.
In any case, the remaining levels of Toluene are far below the
allowable limits for leaving in place as determined by the
Environmental Fate Worksheets, and further investigative work
does not appear warranted. Benzene was the only substance
encountered on the Hammertown property which exceeded the LUFT
Manual allowable limits, (HBH #2; ) all others fall far below
those standards.
The only domestic water well in the area is located at the corner
of Swain & Tam Q'Shanter; it is tested on a regular basis and has
not recorded any "hits" from hydrocarbon-based compounds.
At this time, my client has not finalized plans for further work,
if indeed any is warranted.
