06 October 2008
AGE-NC Project No. 06- 1457
3.0. SCOPE OF WORK
Based on analytical results from previous site assessment activities, the mass of hydrocarbon-
impacted soil at the site appears to be within the saturated zone in the former UST area near wells
EW- 1 and MW- 1 as shown in Figure 4. hnpact__ a _d soils remain in the saturated zone at the site27 s s
feet below surface grade (bsg) yet above a depth of 70 feet bsQ. Impacted ground water is focused
in the former UST area near well EW- 1 .
' v' Based upon the results of the groundwater extraction well EW- Ion 20December
2006, ground water extraction well EW4 appears adequately developed. The conclusions and
recommendations made in the AGE-prepared Ground Water Pump Test and Soil Vapor Extraction
Pilot Test Report dated 20 March 2006 by remain valid: ground water extraction at the site does not
appear feasible. The site hydrogeologic condition are ideal for dual-phase extraction (SVE/shallow
ground water) and will allow for the remediation impacted hydrocarbon mass at depths below the
current water table of approximately 25 feet below surface grade. The second benefit for DPE would
be removal severely MTBE-impacted ground water.
AGE proposes the performance ofa3 -daydualphasesoil-va of roundwater extraction (DPE) pilot
study to evaluate the effectiveness of the DPE process and prepare for additional remediation of
impacted soil and ground water at the site, should "full-scale" or "enhanced" remediation be
necessary. The proposed scope of work will include the following tasks :
• Pre-field work preparations;
• DPE pilot study; and
• Evaluation of the pilot study with preparation of a report of findings .
3 . 1 . PRE-FIELD WORK PREPARATIONS
An update to the health and safety plan presently on-file will be prepared in accordance with
Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U. S . Coast Guard and U. S .
Environmental Protection Agency, 1985).
3 .2, DPE PILOT STUDY
The proposed remedial pilot study will utilize a high vacuum dual phase extraction system intended
to remove hydrocarbons from the vadose, capillary fringe and upper saturated zones. AGE proposes
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
