HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN <br /> Village West: Marina <br /> Page 2 <br /> 3) if excavation is five ( 5) feet or more the hole shall be <br /> tapered, braced , or other equivalent methods shall be used to <br /> prevent possible cave-ins . Precautions will be taken at all <br /> times . <br /> Soil samples will be taken by Geo Analytical Laboratories , Inc. , <br /> Modesto, CA. The method of sampling will be soil excavation by <br /> backhoe . Samples will be taken by hand with brass tube from <br /> backhoe bucket. Samples will be taken two (2) feet to four (4) <br /> feet by hand using brass tube. All of the above procedures will <br /> be done according to code. <br /> After the soil samples have been taken, the owner will backtill <br /> the excavated hole. <br /> Western i?,leter Service will hold shop meetings before start of <br /> tank removals to discuss safety procedures . The "buddy system" <br /> will be discussed and the course of action to be taken should an <br /> injury occur to an employee. Some of many rules to be discussed <br /> to help prevent injury or accident are: 1) avoid standing on <br /> top of the tank--surface may be slippery or rusty, 2) check for <br /> falling objects , slipping, and tripping hazards , 3) visqueen <br /> sheeting will be used if necessary around excavated soil. , 4) <br /> where necessary , the site will be secured with construction <br /> barricades and warning signs posted to prevent the exposure of <br /> unauthorized, unprotected people to site hazards , 5 ) limit <br /> exposure time to noisy equipment. 6) keep a safe distance from <br /> the excavation and heavy equipment , 7) stay up-wind trorn the- <br /> tank <br /> hetank and/or excavation to avoid unnecessary exposure whenever <br /> possible, 8) limit exposure by minimizing the exposure time and <br /> maximizing the distance to the source of vapor release , 9) <br /> avoid the area or take special action when ventilating the tank <br /> with water , dry ice or air , 10) do not enter the excavation <br /> without first monitoring the air. <br /> Western Meter Service shall provide Public Health <br /> Service/Environment Health Division a map of the nearest hospital <br /> and route to be taken should an injury occur. A copy of the map <br /> will also be on the job site with permits . <br />
