21 Equipment
' Soil borings will be drilled with hollow stem auger drilling equipment, owned and operated by V&W Drilling
and under the supervision of a registered geologist Soil samples will be collected using a 2 inch (i d }
sampling device, lined with 2 x 6 inch brass sample tubes
' 22 Boring hogs
' A detailed log will be made of each boring The information to be noted includes sample depths, blow counts if
continuous coring device is not used, horizons of detectable contamination (detected by field methods), soil
classification utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System and sediment description (color, texture,
composition, hardness, moisture content, and post-depositional changes that have occurred in the sediments)
23 Cross Contamination Prevention
' All sample equipment(coring sampler, brass tubes etc) and auger(drilling rod, drilling bits, & auger, etc) will
be thoroughly cleaned before being used and between uses Wash water may be containerized in DOT approved
55 gallon drums, labeled, and stored on site until disposition can be arranged Plastic gloves will be worn
' during sample collection and changed between all samples
24 Chain of Custody
' Chain of Custody (CofQ forms are legal documents used to track the handling of samples All dates, times,
persons and companies handling the samples will be listed from the time the sample is collected to its ultimate
disposal A CofC form will be filled out for all samples collected
25 Sample Analysis
Samples will be analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes (BTEX), using EPA method
8020, and for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and gasoline and as diesel, using EPA method
5030/8015m and 3540/8015m The analyses will be performed by Sherwood Laboratories of Hilmar,
California State Certification#1400
' 26 Soil Boring Installation
The soil borings will be drilled using hollow stem auger drilling equipment Soil cuttings will either be
' containerized in DOT approved 55 gallon drums and labeled, or lain on and covered by plastic sheeting, and
stored on site until their proper disposition can be arranged Soil samples will be collected for geological and
analytical evaluation at five foot intervals Soil samples will be collected in 6 0 inch brass liners using a 2 0 inch
' modified California split spoon sampler All soil samples will be sealed with aluminum foil, capped, labeled
and placed in a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory following Chain of Custody protocol
' Because every soil sample collected will not be submitted for laboratory analysis, a screening process will be
used to gather additional information through field observation noting sediment type, especially grain size, clay
content, moisture content, and visible evidence of contamination, i e, color change due to reduction of iron or
discoloration from hydrocarbons and other pollutants
' The soil borings will be closed as follows after the last soil sample has been collected the augers removed from
the boring and 25 pounds of bentonite will be poured into the boring and hydrated with clean tap water The
remaining borehole will be closed by pouring a neat cement grout through the annulus up to grade
' 2937 Veneman Ave, #13240 Phase One Environmental Inc Phone(209)569-0293
Modesto,CA 95,356 Fax(209)569-0295
