Analytical Results
Eight samples were submitted to Superior from the first round of samples on September 17,
1992, and six samples were submitted from the second round on October 23, 1992. Superior
is certified by the State of California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for the
requested analyses. The first round of samples were analyzed for:
Total purgeable petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-gasoline);
► Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX);
► Ethylene dibromide (EDB);
► Total lead.
The second set of samples were analyzed for:
TPH-gasoline;
► BTEX;
► Total lead.
Each set of samples was analyzed on a standard laboratory turnaround schedule requiring
approximately five working days for the receipt of data.
Benzene, ethylbenzene, gasoline, and EDB were not detected in any of the first round samples.
Toluene was detected 1n Sample Nos. 74123 and 74128 at 4 and 3 ug/kg, respectively.
Xylenes were detected in Sample No. 74122, 74123, 74126, and 74128 at 15, 14, 13, and 9
ug/kg, respectively. Lead was detected above the reporting limit in all but one of the samples
(74127). However, only Sample No. 74128 contained lead at a concentration which
Kleinfelder would consider slightly elevated (22 mg/kg). Due to San Joaquin County's
interpretation of their contract with the State of California, these results are considered by San
Joaquin County to be qualitative because a County representative was not present to direct the
sample collection.
In the second set of samples, lead was reported at the detection limit of 5 mg/kg in Sample
Nos. 74153 and 74155, and xylenes were reported in Sample No. 74155 at 9 ug/kg. The
remaining BTEX constituents, TPH-gasoline, and lead were not detected in the second round
samples.
The analytical data is summarized on the attached table, the chain-of-custodies, and the
analytical laboratory reports are attached.
Conclusions
Fourteen samples were collected during two sampling rounds. With the exception of the lead
concentrations reported in Sample No. 74128, concentrations were either non-detect
(gasoline), non-detect to just above detection limits (BTEX), or background (lead). Sample
No. 74156 was collected at approximately the same location as Sample No. 74128 but did not
contain detectable concentrations of lead. The slightly elevated lead concentrations reported in
Sample No. 75128 may be the result of a variety of naturally occurring or roan induced
factors; however, based on the second sample (No. 74156) results, further work to explore
these possibilities does not appear warranted.
Based on the reported results, Kleinfelder requests closure of the site so that the stockpiled soil
may be sent to Forward for bioremediation, and the excavation and remaining trenches may be
backfilled.
FR8-92-219 Page 2 of 3 24-220165-D00
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc.
KLEINFELDER 3077 Fite Circle, Sacramento, CA 95827 (916) 366-1701
