Particulates Not Otherwise Regulated. PNOC is a term given to a variety of dusts that
may not cause fibrosis or systemic effects. At high concentrations, otherwise nontoxic
particulates have been associated with the occasionally fatal condition know as alveolar
proteinosis. High concentration of finely divided dusts and powders can also be explosive. At
lower concentrations, the dust can inhibit the clearance of dust from the lung by decreasing
the mobility of the alveolar macrophages. The airborne PEL is 10 mg/m' for PNOC total
dust and 5.0 mg/m' for dust small enough to enter the lower respiratory tract.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
All BC staff and subcontractor employees working on site have completed training in hazard
recognition and basic health and safety issues as required by the occupational safety and health
regulations contained in 29 CFR 1910.120 (e). In addition, each BC employee and subcontractor
employee will be familiar with the requirements of this SSHP, and will participate in site
activity and safety briefings conducted by the SSO.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Based on the hazard analysis for this project, the following PPE will be required and used.
Changes to these specified items of PPE will not be made without the approval of the SSO.
1. Hard hat
2. Steel-toed, chemical-resistant, safety boots
3. Nitrile gloves and liners
4. Safety glasses
5. Ear plugs, depending on noise levels.
PPE requirements will be upgraded if site conditions warrant. Hard hats, safety boots, and
safety glasses must meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) specifications.
Level C is not authorized for this project. See the guidelines for suspension of work below.
SUSPENSION OF WORK
Due to the fact that this is not a hazardous waste site and hazardous exposures are not
anticipated air monitoring will not be performed. However, work shall be suspended when:
❑ Initial surveys suggest presence of buried containers or unidentifiable unnatural material
(excluding utilities).
❑ Unnatural discoloration of soil is noticed.
P:\20000\20587\SSHP Ri.doc Page 7
