EVAX Project 8578- y 15, 1992
SOIL SAMPLING
A total of 5 soil samples were taken from the tank excavation. The
geologist directed the backhoe operator to retrieve a load of soils
from approximately 1.5 feet below the floor of the excavation at each
end of Tanks 1 and 2, and at the fill end of Tank 3. Tank 1 samples
were designated TIS (fill end) and TIN (non-fill end) . Tank 2 samples
were designated T2S (fill end) and T2N (non-fill end) . Only 1 sample
was taken from beneath Tank 3; the sample, T3S, was retrieved from
beneath the fill end of the tank.
In. addition, 2 samples were taken from bottom half of the stockpile of
excavated soils and backfill . Each sample was retrieved from separate
pits dug into the stockpile by hand with a shovel . The 2 stockpile
samples were designated SP-1 and SP-2, respectively. Soil sampling
locations are presented in the Site Plan, Figure 1.
` Each sample was collected by driving a pre-cleaned brass sleeve of 2-
inch diameter and 6-inch length into the soils. The soil packed sleeve
was then sealed with aluminum foil , plastic end caps, and tape. Each
sample was labeled and then placed in iced storage for transport to a
state certified laboratory. A chain of custody record was initiated in
the field and followed the samples to the laboratory.
LABORATORY ANALYSES
The soil samples were submitted in iced storage on April 22, 1992 to
Trace Analytical Laboratory Inc. (California Environmental Laboratory
+✓ Accreditation Certificate 1199) of Hayward, California. Samples TIN,
TIS, T2N, T2S, SP-1, and SP-2 were each analyzed for: total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and ethylene dibromide by Department of
Health Services (DHS) recommended methods, and total lead by
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 7420. Samples T3S, SP-1,
and SP-2 were each analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel
i, (TPHd) by DHS recommended method. All 7 soil samples were analyzed for
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes by EPA Method 8020.
The laboratory analyses report and chain of custody record are attached
to this report.
-2-
