Soil and
groundwater samples collected at this site evidence petroleum contamination. Further
evaluation of soil and groundwater contamination at this site is necessary.
Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE)was evidenced in groundwater at 7.6 parts per billion
(ppb). The secondary maximum contaminant level for MTBE in drinking water is
currently 5 ppb. Concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPHg) and
total petroleum hydrocarbon as diesel (TPHd) were evidenced in groundwater as high as
3,100 ppb and 2,900,000 ppb respectively. The highest concentrations of benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) evidenced in groundwater were 3.7 ppb, 2.7
ppb, 5.5 ppb, and 2.5 ppb, respectively. Concentrations of BTEX, TPHg, TPHd, and
oxygenates in the groundwater must be confirmed by utilizing repeatable sampling points
to obtain representative groundwater samples.
TPHd was evidenced in soil at 1.8 parts per million (ppm) 25 feet below surface grade
(bsg) in P1. TPHd was also evidenced in soil at 2.4 ppm 20 feet bsg in P4. A soil sample
collected from P4 at 10 feet bsg evidenced TPHd at 3,400 ppm. The vertical and lateral
extent of soil contamination must be determined at the site. If further investigation
reveals significant TPHd contamination in soil at this site, PHS/EHD recommends that
removal of the affected soil at this site be proposed in a work plan.
A minimum of three monitoring wells must be constructed to evaluate the groundwater
conditions and to establish the groundwater gradient. Monitoring wells should be
screened at an interval that is representative of the affected groundwater. At least one
monitoring well should be located in the area of boring P4.
Quarterly monitoring must be initiated after the monitoring wells have been installed and
continue until otherwise directed by PHS/EHD. Groundwater samples should be
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
