AUGEAS Corporation
California Natural Products
Problem Assessment Report
June, 1991
Three groundwater monitoring wells were installed during this investigation near the margins of the zone
of contamination.Water samples collected from the two groundwater monitoring wells(MW-1 and MW-
3) contained detectable levels of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds.
Specific work performed during this phase of the investigation included:
1. Preparation of a Problem Assessment Workplan and completion of monitoring well permits.
a s 2. Drilling of 11 soil borings.
• 3. Collection of soil samples at 5-foot intervals; screening of collected soil samples in the borings with
a photoionization detector (PID); and continuous lithologic logging of each of the boreholes.
4. Installation of three groundwater monitoring wells.
5. Development of the three monitoring wells and collection of water samples.
6.Analysis of soil and water samples for BTXE and total petroleum hydrocarbons in the gasoline range.
7. Surveying of each monitoring well for location and top of the casing elevation.
8. Preparation of this report.
In summary, soil and groundwater contamination has resulted from the leakage of gasoline from a sub-
surface product line which was connected to an above-ground fuel storage tank and associated fuel pump.
Although the areal and vertical extent of the soil contamination has been determined, the areal extent of
groundwater contamination has not been completely defined. However, based on the levels of aromatic
hydrocarbons found in MW-1 and MW-3,it is believed that the areal extent of groundwater contamination
closely approximates that of the soil contamination.
•
3
