sampler containing one clean 6 inch long by 2 inch diameter brass sleeve will be driven into the
undisturbed soil to obtain the sample. One soil sample will be obtained from each end of each
UST, for a total of six soil samples, see site map - Figure 3.
The sample sleeve will be field screened using a photo-ionizing detector (PID) with a 10.6 ev bulb.
Then the soil sample sleeve will be preserved for laboratory analysis as described below.
DECON PROCEDURES
The augers, samplers or any other devices that will enter the borings will be cleaned prior to being
used, between sample points and at the end of the drilling/sampling activities. The sampling
equipment will be washed in water containing Tri Sodium Phosphate (TSP) and then rinsed in
clean water prior and after being used. All rinseate will be stored on site in the 1000 gallon
ConVault for later disposal.
PIPING/DISPENSER REMOVAL DOCUMENTATION SAMPLING
One soil sample will be obtained from native soil beneath the removed product dispensing piping
for every 20 linear feet of piping trench and one soil sample from beneath each dispenser. The
samples will be collected in a 2-inch by 6-inch clean brass sleeve. Immediately after being
obtained the sample will be field screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds,
gasoline's range , using a PID (photo-ionizing detector) containing a 10.6 ev bulb.
EXCAVATED SOIL STOCKPILE DOCUMENTATION SAMPLING
As the soil is excavated from the UST area and the dispenser and piping areas it will be field
screened with the above-described PID. Soil that field screens less than 10 ppmv with the PID and
has no odor will be placed into the clean stockpile. Soil that field screens greater than 10 ppmv or
has odor will be placed into a separate stockpile.
Both stockpiles will be sampled at a frequency of two samples per 50 cubic yards. Samples will be
obtained from approximately 12 inches below the surface of the stockpile in random order per 50
cubic yards to fully represent the stockpile. These samples will be preserved as described below
and Chain of Custody delivered to a State of California Certified Laboratory for analysis as
described in the Sample Analysis section of this workplan.
SAMPLE PRESERVATION
The sample sleeve containing the soil sample will be sealed with teflon sheets and plastic end caps
to prevent the loss of VOC's (volatile organic compounds). The plastic end caps will be sealed to
the brass sleeve with duct tape and the sleeve labeled with site ID, sample ID, date and time
2 R-603 UST WP 2/23/99
