C A M B R I A Mr. Steven Shih <br />June 20, 2005 <br />SAMPLING ACTIVITIES AND SAMPLE ANALYSES <br />On March 18, 2005, Paradiso Mechanical, Inc. (Paradiso) of San Leandro, California removed <br />two 15,000 -gallon, double-wall, fiberglass gasoline USTs, four dispensers, and associated <br />product piping. Attachment A presents Cambria's standard procedures for tank, dispenser and <br />piping removal sampling, and excavation sampling. <br />Personnel Present: <br />• Steven Shih, Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist, SJCEHD <br />• Steve Dalton, Fire Inspector, Stockton Fire Department <br />• Mark Freitas, Construction Foreman, Paradiso <br />• Stewart Dalie, Senior Staff Scientist, Cambria <br />• Ron Barone, Staff Geologist, Cambria <br />Sampling Dates: March 18, April 1, and April 4, 2005. <br />UST, Dispenser, and Product Piping Removal Observations: On March 18, 2005, Cambria field <br />staff observed no cracks or holes in the USTs during tank removal activities. No staining or <br />odors were present in soil beneath the USTs. Cambria field staff also observed the removal of <br />four dispensers and the associated product piping. Staining and odors were observed under the <br />western, northern, and eastern dispensers and product piping. <br />UST Excavation Soil Sampling: On March 18, 2005, Cambria field staff collected six soil <br />samples (TP -1-19 through TP -6-19) from the bottom of the UST excavation at approximately <br />19 feet below grade (fbg). Figure 3 shows sample locations. Soil samples were collected from <br />the UST excavation using an excavator. The soil was removed from the excavator bucket, <br />packed into clean brass sample tubes, and tube ends were covered with Teflon tape and plastic <br />end caps. Soil samples were labeled, placed into a cooler with ice, entered onto a chain of <br />custody record, and transported to a California -certified analytical laboratory. <br />Dispenser and Product Piping Sampling: On March 18, 2005, Cambria field staff collected 10 <br />soil samples from beneath the former product dispensers (D-1-5 through D-4-5) and piping (P-1-5 <br />through P-4-5, P-6-5, and P-7-5) from native soil at approximately 5 fbg (Figure 3). Soil samples <br />were collected using a backhoe in the manner described above. <br />Over -Excavation Sampling: On April 1 and 4, 2005, Cambria directed lateral and vertical over - <br />exaction in select dispenser and piping locations. Cambria conducted over -excavation in the <br />vicinity of the north and eastern dispensers, including the area between the dispensers. The final <br />extent of over -excavation in the vicinity of these two dispensers was irregularly shaped and <br />approximately 36 feet long by 10.5 feet wide by 12 feet deep.
