with the drums. The backhoe was positioned on the north side of the area to be <br /> excavated, and began removing soil. It was temporarily placed next to the site, and <br /> periodically moved to the east side of the property and placed on black plastic. Soil <br /> contamination was heaviest immediately beneath the removed pump islands, although <br /> there was no evidence of free product. As excavation continued, visible evidence of <br /> contamination decreased significantly below 10 feet on the north, east, and south <br /> sides. However, it was still present on the west wall next to the building. Because It <br /> was not possible to excavate beneath the foundation, the extent of the soil plume to <br /> the west cannot be accurately estimated. <br /> Sediments consisted primarily of brown to dark gray plastic clay interbedded with <br /> greenish-grey clay and minor sand lenses. It was difficult to identify contaminated <br /> areas because of the color of the native clay. Tan to light brown clay was <br /> encountered on the bottom and three sides of the excavation. It was fairly firm, <br /> slightly moist, with very few sand grains. It did not have any odor or signs of <br /> discoloration. <br /> The north end of the excavation encountered the pea gravel used to fill the hole <br /> occupied by the removed UST's. At a depth of 10' 6", groundwater began seeping <br /> into the hole. There was a slight scum on the surface, but no "rainbow" or sheen <br /> 4...• noted. The backhoe was repositioned as needed, and the final size of the exca- <br /> vation measured 17' x 8' x 12' deep. Prior to taking a water sample, the backhoe <br /> bucked was pushed into the muddy soil in the bottom of the pit to allow water to run <br /> into it. A hose from a vacuum truck was lowered into the bucket, and several gallons <br /> of muddy water was removed. A clean liter bottle provided by the analytical lab was <br /> lowered into the bucket and 4 voa's and a liter bottle of water were collected. <br /> Soil was removed from the bottom and the four sides of the hole with the backhoe <br /> bucket. Samples were taken from the teeth by the geologist in charge by pushing <br /> clean metal tubes into the soil; covering the ends with teflon tape and plastic end <br /> caps. Both ends were sealed with duct tape, the sleeves were labeled and were <br /> placed on ice pending transport to the laboratory. Refer to PLATE V for the locations <br /> of the soil samples and other details. <br /> Approximately 70 cubic yards of material was removed from the excavation. It was <br /> temporarily stored on the property. It was placed on, and covered with, black plastic. <br /> The excavation was filled with pea gravel and topped with road base. It has since <br /> been covered with asphalt. <br /> The preserved soil samples were transferred under chain of custody to the courier <br /> from Sherwood Labs. The geologist left the site at 1500 hours. <br /> 5 <br />
