Manure will only be sold to bona fide
agricultural users or soil amendment manufacturers.
Manure
will ibe myna edla reduce the loss of nutrients to the atmosphere during story e to make
thelmana ed manure a more stable fertilizer when land a lied and to reduce pathogens. vector
E
attraction'and odors.
Land Application
E
The land application method should be selected based on the type and consistency of solid
manure available, management of the confined animal operation (including solid management
system), physical features of the farm, operator preferences, and availability of labor.
Applied manure will be incorporated into the soil as soon as possible to preserve nutrient'value
and reduce the opportunity for odor complaints.
The benefit from solids applied and incorporated into the soil via discing or plowing will increase
both the water holding capacity, tilth, percolation rate and the ability to contain nitrate nitrogen in
the anion enhanced environment.
It is recommended that the solids to be applied to the cropland be composted to minimize the
amount of nitrogen applied to the fields due to an abundance of nitrogen available in the liquid
form. Composting of the manure solids will condition the solids prior to application to the farms.
Composting converts an organic manure effluent material into a stable organic product by
k converting nitrogen from the unstable ammonia form to a more stable organic form. The end result
,
is a product that is safer to use than raw organic material.
E
Hauled
Hauling equipment provides a mechanism for evenly applying or spreading the manure
to the application area. Manure spreaders or box spreaders are used for solid
and semi-solid manure.
Large volume tanker type equipment can transport the manure to the general area of application,
where the manure is transferred to the application equipment. The separation of hauling equipment
from the application equipment allows the economical transport of manure over considerable
distances.
When transporting manure to a field, special consideration will be given to soil and climate
characteristics that limit the opportunity for manure application. Soil texture and drainage.,
characteristics can limit trafficability at application sites. Excess traffic on the sites during 'certain
periods of the year can lead to soil compaction and eventually to excessive surface runoff.
See Page 47 for References and Bibliography
®Western Dairy Design Associates,Inc.2003
Page 40
I
C
'i.
