t
I
Trager Soil Suitability Study
Page No. 3
An operating domestic water well is located adjacent to the existing shop. A water
sample was obtained from this well on September 3, 1996. The sample was submitted to the
laboratory and tested for the presence of DBCP and nitrates. A copy of the test results is
contained in the appendix. Test results indicate that both DBCP was not detected and nitrates
were detected at 25 mg/L, which is below the Maximum Contamination Level (MCL) of 45
mg/L.
VL SOIL PROFILE AND PERCOLATION TESTS
Two, 10 foot deep test holes were excavated by hand in the area of the proposed
homesites in order to determine the soil profile in the general area. For approximate location of
the test holes (PT) see the Parcel Map in the Appendix. The tests holes were logged by a
engineer and a description of the soils encountered in each test hole is contained in the Appendix.
The soils encountered in the test holes was predominately clay and sandy clay. For a more
i detailed description of the soils encountered see the log of test holes.
One, 36 inch deep by 8 inch diameter test hole and one 24 inch deep by 8 inch diameter
test hole were excavated by hand adjacent to the soil profile holes for performing shallow
percolation tests. Two inches of gravel was placed in the bottom of each hole. A 2.5 inch
diameter perforated pipe was then placed in each hole and backfilled with gravel. Test hole PT-1
and PT-2 was filled with water 24 hours prior to running the test. The last half hour of the tests
r readings were witnessed by a county health official and the test data obtained is enclosed in the
appendix. The percolation rates have been adjusted to account for the gravel and pipe backfill.
Calculations for adjustments are on the test data sheets.
A summary of the test results is presented next:
i
F Diameter of Depth of
Test No. Hole in. Hole in. Percolation Rate mi in
PT-1 8 36 13
'i PT-2 8 24 320
The percolation rate determined for test PT-2, which was located at the proposed new
homesite, exceeds the maximum rate of 120 min./in. allowed for shallow leach fields. Due to
the relatively shallow depth of ground water, the use of dry wells or seepage trenches is not
possible. If an elevated pad is constructed for a homesite, the elevated pad should also include
area for a leach field. It is recommended that a percolation test be pe ormed once any1ias
DoE its
o1;
f N
x w
! a
i
4s504%
