Farm building and small shed are visible in northwest
corner of property. The land in this area is cultivated.
Dredge tailings show prominently, but may not extend onto
the property. A pond appears west of the old egg farm
buildings. Manure spreading north and northeast of' the
f shop is apparent. Manure appears to be stacked in .',long
rows. No visual sign of landfilling. The large shop has
been built.
F4
1975 The chicken farm has been expanded to include new build-
ings north of the shop, in the excluded area. An area
west of the new farm buildings appears to be a spreading
area, with a containment dike and area of water (roughly
in the vicinity of the offices) . Some cultivation !(hay-
ing) appears on Tracts II and V. Gas line easement now
appears in the photograph. Dredging is still visible in
this photograph. No evidence of landfilling visible in
the photograph.
F1989 The gravel quarry is now present. The scrap area is seen
west of the quarry. The gravel processing plant has not
yet been built, but the new egg farm buildings immediate-
ly south of the process plant have been completed. Fowl
' waste spreading and processing areas appear as they do
today east of the gravel process plant. Additional egg
i
farm buildings south of Tract II are also constructed.
In summary, a review of historic aerial photographs of' the
- property indicates that it has been used as agricultural land at
least since the early 1960s.
With respect to mineral land classification, the project area
contains three mineral resource zones - MRZ-1, MRZ-2 , and MRZ-3 -
according to the California Department of Conservation Division
of Mines and Geology. The portion of the project area reserve
with an MRZ-2 identification approximates the proposed excavation
area.
4.8 Biota
The proposed KRC Aggregate, Inc. project site has been sur-
veyed on several occasions in order to characterize the habitats,
r flora, and fauna in the permit area, evaluate the impact of
quarry excavation operations on these resources, and forward
recommendations for measures to minimize or mitigate potential
r impacts. Field surveys were conducted by Julie Etra, Botanist
for Western Botanical Services of Reno, Nevada, on October', 14 and
31, 1993 . Field surveys were also performed on April 21 and 28,
1993 , by Greg Smestad, Vegetation Specialist for Knife River Coal
Mining Company. Findings of these surveys and a literature
review pertinent to them are presented herein. Lists of plants
and animals observed or expected on the project site appear at
the end of this section.
KRC Aggregate, Inc.
j
- 7 - April 1, 1994
