Project-specific Health and Saf*-161an:Extended Site Characterization, 7500 K! 11th*WTracy Page 2
Chemical Hazards
Eight underground storage tanks and their associated piping beneath the site were removed in
December 1998. Soil and groundwater in the subsurface beneath the subject property is
known to be contaminated by gasoline and diesel. Gasoline and diesel may contain fractional
components that are known to be human carcinogens. They also contain compounds that may
injure human respiratory, hepatic, renal functions, and the central nervous system. If there is
'-' exposure to high concentrations of the vapors of these fuels for long periods, dermal and eye
injuries can also be sustained, especially if contact is made with the compounds in liquid
form or with waste materials that are highly saturated with these materials.
Amp
Specific Health and Safety Requirements:
The work required for this project is not known to involve special hazards beyond those
covered by the standard requirements of The San Joaquin Company Inc.'s Master Heath
Health and Safety Plan, incorporated herein by reference. All work will be conducted in
compliance with the applicable policies, safety rules and safe working practices set out in
that Master Plan, a copy of which is on file with SJCHCSA. However, for emphasis, the
following specific requirements are cited.
Site Access Control
When push probe, hydro-punch or drill-rig operations are in progress at on-site or off-site
locations, no persons other than those necessary to accomplish the work will be permitted to
approach closer than 25 ft. of the probing or drilling site.
No visitors, other than workers directly engaged in the work or authorized representatives of
the project engineers, the property owners or regulatory agencies, shall be permitted to enter
the property while the work is in progress. All visitors shall comply with the applicable
requirements of The San Joaquin Company Inc.'s Master Health and Safety Plan.
Protective Clothing and Equipment
. Based on the hazards known to be present, personal protective equipment requirements for
this project correspond to Level D (ref. Master Health and Safety Plan). The following
clothing and protective equipment must be used by personnel engaged in the work.
s..
❑ Steel-toed boots.
«- ❑ Safety glasses when performing any operation in which a hazard to
the eyes exists (e.g. welding, cutting, burning, sandblasting, grinding
or hammering).
r
❑ Strong, non-slip gloves.
+y (Note: Gloves need not be worn when no identified risk to the hands or
risk of chemical injury to the skin exists or when no risk due to
absorption of a chemical through the skin is known to be present,or when
S)C
w..
