1 _ _
I. INTRODUCTION = -
SSS§'1:2. r.. d Mrs. Bill and Rita Sorrent are To osing to subfivide a fG6 acre property
.they own i to six rets. ,One Parcel is to be 10.45 aches, another at 11.11 'c s, another at 11.81'
and three P cels tl 1.2 aces. The project is kina.a.rural,-unsewered area-of San Joaquin County;/
northeast of t t wn.o£Escalon. City water, and sewer services will never serve this area. Domestic
_ water and sewer forany future.development will be septic system and on-site domestic well.
f ..
= This report presents the findings of the Nitrate Loading Study and-.Soil Suitability Study _
conducted for the proposed subdivision of the subject property. The San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Departmerif(EHD) requires Nitrate Loading and Soil Suitability Studies for
projects in unsevered and/or currently nitrate impacted areas, or for projects which may
potentially_impact the underlying groundwater with nitrate. The primary concern of nitrate in
drinking water is'that high concentrations can cause methemoglobinemia in infants. This disease
occurs through a series of complex chemical reactions within the hemoglobin in the blood. Only
infants and young children are susceptible. Although this disease is extremely rare, nitrate can
also potentially cause other health concerns. There have been scientific studies to suggest that
nitrate may produce carcinogenic effects. .
This report complies with the San Joaquin County.Development.Title, Section 9-1105.2 for a
Nitrate'Loading Study and Soil Suitability Study. Additionally,'this proposed project must comply
with the Environmental Health. I Department Sewa a Standards-s ci ica ly Section 10 -
"'Require ffients for Waste DisposaFfor New Land Developments."
In surmary, the following information was obtained from. studies:Results of the soil percolation j
testing reveal that the surface soils (typical leachline depth)will not readily manage effluent flows for
any future residential development.-This was to be expected since the subject property has been in rice
N production for many.years and is lmown for its heavy clay and hardpan soils. The subsurface soils
(sumps or seepage pit depth)will manage the majority of future effluent-flow volumes for all six
_proposed Parcels.°
This Study determned thenitrate-nitrogen impact from the proposed six Parcels, quantified through the
scientifically recognize_d Hantzsche-Finnemore Equation,would theoretically produce a nitrate-nitrogen
effluent concentration that is below the Maximum Contaminant Level State Standard of 10 ppm nitrate-
nitrogen covering the entire 66.3 acre subject property.
Withinthetext of this Report, bolded Section (§)numbers will be referenced at the beginning of an
applicable sentence, paragraph or Appendix that correspond with the EHD Requirements Checklist.
Section Numbers referenced as-SSS§, are sections applicable for the Soil Suitability Study. Section
Numbers referenced as NLS§, are sections applicable for the Nitrate Loading Study.
Page 4-
_ Chesney Consulting
